David Bolling has lived in the Valley of the Moon since 1976, which, in the historic reach of this community, makes him a relative newcomer. His media career has spanned daily and community newspapers, local, regional and national magazines, radio, television and documentary films and, in a parallel life, he has been an environmental activist and author.
Bolling has conducted more than 2,000 interviews with subjects ranging from U.S. presidents to prostitutes, from film stars to famous dogs (Lassie). He has won more than 50 state and national awards for his writing, editing and photojournalism, and for his documentary film, “Living and Dying on Everest.”
He has traveled from Mt. Everest, to Siberia, to the Great Barrier Reef, witnessing the effects of climate change and covering stories of adventure, environmental loss and survival. For four years he hosted and scripted outdoor/environmental adventure shows for the Outdoor Life Network, creating programs from the Caribbean to remote points in Alaska, and all across America.
He is the former editor and publisher of the weekly, 52,000-circulation Santa Rosa News Herald (now defunct), the co-founder and editor of Sonoma Business magazine (now Northbay Biz), the former publisher of Whole Earth magazine and the former Executive Director of Home Energy magazine.
After serving eight years as editor of both the Sonoma Index-Tribune and SONOMA magazine (as founding editor), he resigned and, in 2015, launched Valley of the Moon magazine with a select core of co-workers.
In occasional tangents from the mainstream he has variously been a meditation teacher, a whitewater river guide and organizer of environmental forums in remote regions of the world.
David lives in Glen Ellen – the heart of the Valley of the Moon. He is married, with three daughters, a cat and a dog.
